Sodium Lauryl Ether Sulfate (SLES)

Sodium lauryl ether sulfate (SLES), also known as Sodium Laureth sulfate, is a surfactant belonging to the group of alkyl ether sulfates.

Alkyl ether sulfates are among the most important anionic surfactants. They have a polar head group that consists of two or three oxyethylene units and a sulfate group. On the other hand, their hydrophobic part is usually a carbon chain derived from a fatty alcohol. Sodium lauryl ether sulfate is broadly used in hygiene products and cosmetics due to its strong detergency, excellent emulsification, and foamability. It is considered to be a suitable alternative to more irritating anionic surfactants like sodium lauryl sulfate.
